Amanda Palmer, the Open Piano For Refugees Event and The PH Grand Piano

At the end of October 2019 PH Pianos were delighted to loan a PH Grand Piano to the Open Piano for Refugees Event that took place at the Sceneindgangen Dance Studio in Copenhagen. The purpose of this event was to raise money for the DoRoMi social music school in Vienna. The DoRoMi social music institute provides music lessons for refugees and socially disadvantaged people. At the music institute all are welcome: it is a place for participants to improve their German language skills and well as learning to play a musical instrument. The DoReMi music school creates an environment that makes music...

PH Grand Dressing Table: Every day, Luxury

Designed in 1920 by Poul Henningsen (PH), the PH Grand Dressing Table is the larger relative of the PH Dressing Table, sharing all of the beautiful design features of it’s smaller counterpart – with the added advantage of extra storage space. The PH Grand Dressing Table boasts five deep drawers, perfectly designed to hide all manner of personal effects, to ensure the bedroom or dressing room in which it is placed remains free of clutter. PH Stories: The PH Grand Piano at a Private Residence, Copenhagen

When Besmir Ismaili recently purchased a house in Copenhagen for his parents, sister and brothers, it represented a symbol of his achievement as a Music Producer. Besmir’s love and talent for music is a family trait, since his Father is a successful Albanian folk musician who moved with his family to Denmark during the 1990s. Besmir wanted to buy a gift to be appreciated for his Father: his choice was the Poul Henningsen designed PH Grand Piano, which sits in pride of place in the modernist family home, itself a futuristic display of minimalism created from structural glass. PH Pianos...

PH Stories: The PH Grand Piano at a Private Residence, California

Nestled deep in the hills near San Diego, sits a privately owned house, recently constructed as a family home in the 21st Century, reminiscent of Alvar Aalto’s 1930s masterpiece of architectural design, Villa Mairea in Noormarkku, Finland. Inside of Aalto’s original Villa Mairea there is a space known as the ‘Piano Room’ where Alvar Aalto’s wife Aino Maria Marsio-Aalto (herself an architect and designer) is said to have enjoyed playing the piano in the home of Aalto’s friends and clients Harry and Maire Gullicksen for whom Villa Mairea was created. The piano inside of Villa Mairea is an original Poul...

The PH Desk: A Place to call Home

Desks mean different things to different people. For some, they are symbolic: they mean a place to work without distraction. Desks can mean more than that, however, a place of safety, comfort and familiarity, a place to return to after experiences away in an uncertain world. There is a reason why museums celebrating the lives of famous people often display their subject’s workspace. As a viewing audience, we are fascinated by the desk spaces of celebrated individuals, as it gives us an insight in to the mind of their owner. This demonstrates just how significant workspaces are to the outcome...

Innovation From The Ground Up

Poul Henningsen (‘PH’) was inspired to create furniture that improved upon all that had gone before him. Using his knowledge as an architect and designer  – and later inspired by the Bauhaus movement in Germany – PH was able to create furniture that is as refreshing to the senses in contemporary times as it was during his lifetime. PH was unapologetically non-conformist and in order to truly innovate, he abandoned many of the traditional concepts of what furniture ‘should’ look like: this most evident in the construct of the legs of his furniture which are anything but conventional. Curved legs feature...

Poul Henningsen Cabinets: To Have and to Hold

Poul Henningsen (PH), in keeping with Scandinavian design traditions and the Bauhaus influences of the 1930s he would adopt, believed in uncomplicated environments. PH realised that for a home to be truly functional, there must be space for storage. Initially inspired by a commission to create furniture for the apartment of a newly married couple in Copenhagen in 1919 and driven by a wider desire to improve the quality of daily life for everyone who owned his designs, PH devoted much thought to addressing the need for tidiness in his furniture creations. PH realised that for a life to be...

The PH Dressing Table: An Object of Desire

Historically, humans have alway held the instinct to look at their reflection and adorn themselves as a means of self-expression. There is evidence that the desire to take care of one’s appearance can be traced back as far as the Ancient Egyptians, when those of high status would own elaborately jewelled or carved cosmetic boxes to carry items which they believed protected against illness, the effects of the sun, from the influences of evil spirits and of course, made them appear more ‘beautiful’. There is evidence that Egyptians of royal status would employ a servant to carry on their behalf...

Designed for Life: Tables for Every Generation
It is often said that ‘life is what happens when you are busy making plans’: at PH Furniture, we know that the most important plans do not always get made at the office but rather at the kitchen table. Piano Forever: An Enduring Love Affair

There is a wealth of historical evidence that tells us that music has been part of our lives since primitive times. Music is generally a feature at every significant life event: births, marriages and deaths, there is a song for every occasion and a piece of music to accompany every moment in between. Music helps us to socialise, to be alone, to remember and to forget: at every turn music provides us with the soundtrack to our lives. The piano of course is the sonic chameleon of musical instruments. The ’pianoforte’ was invented over three hundred years ago by Italian...

The PH Lounge Chair – So Easy!

For when the living is easy. As a believer in Bauhaus design ideology, Poul Henningsen was absolutely clear that the functional performance of his furniture was paramount to the design. Poul Henningsen made no apology for this and in recognition of the importance of leisure as something distinct from ‘working’ and ‘eating’, the PH Lounge chair is all about complete relaxation. Henningsen was well aware that the best ideas do not always happen at a desk and that allowing time for contemplation and creative thought in a situation that allowed the mind to flourish freely was as important as creating spaces conducive...
