Designer: Poul Henningsen, 1954

PH Axe Table

Designed in the early 1950s, the PH Axe Table features table legs shaped like the axe handles that Poul Henningsen was inspired by during a visit to Canada. Poul Henningsen looked beyond the axe as simply a functional item for chopping wood and instead reinvented it to create an interesting and durable table with a wide variety of uses. All PH Axe Tables are delivered with an individually numbered plate.

All PH Axe Tables can be purchased with the beautiful and well-known PH 3 ½ – 2 ½ Table Lamp. In such case the PH Axe Table is prepared for the lamp to be mounted in the middle of the table. This PH 3 ½ – 2 ½ Table Lamp is specially made for the PH Axe Table by the lighting company Louis Poulsen and the cable is placed discreetly in one of the axe handles. It is a very elegant solution where the PH lighting and furniture is combined in a beautiful setting.

Product information

Inspired Simplicity For Daily Use.

Inspired by the humble axe handle, Poul Henningsen has utilised this familiar and tactile shape to provide the basis for the legs of this versatile table. This piece of furniture stays true to the fundamental values that drove its designer: it is a table that has multiple functions within its environment – as an occasion table, a table to sit at, a table for display and for meetings, a table for work and always for daily use. The Axe Table can take it all with its solid structure and eight legs. The table legs can be delivered in natural oak, black oak, ash or walnut whereas the table plates come in laminate, natural oak, black oak as well as walnut. As an extra option, the Axe Table is available with a removable wood cover in the middle of the table top. Upon removing the wood cover, PH 3 1/2 – 2 1/2 Table Lamp (see page 50/51 for details) in a special construction with cable outlet below the frame can be installed and plugged in to the pre-installed cable that is hidden in to one of the table legs. The PH lighting adds functional value and highlights the design of this unique piece of furniture designed by PH in the first half of the 1950’s.
